BIG NIK was invited to be a guest speaker at the David Barnes Camp Showcase in Detroit Michigan to share her story. She spoke of humble beginnings in the inner city, her high school/college/professional basketball career, giving back to the community and her battle with Cancer. Her story touched many in attendance.
This youth basketball camp was created to provide the young girls and boys an opportunity to learn basic basketball skills related to passing, shooting, defense, footwork, ball handling, sportsmanship and most importantly FUN! Although there was a small cost to participate in the camp, most of the campers attended free via sponsorship, academic achievement or an income based decreased fee. The camp saw participants create new friendships, learn about teamwork and show leadership in a group setting in just two days! The highlight of the camp were the awards. There was no MVP (Most Valuable Player) in order to not devalue each camper. Instead awards like Best Sportsmanship, Best Hustler, and Best Attitude were given to show the participants that being the leading scorer or rebounder does not mean that your role is not as important. In the end every camper received something. Whether a trophy, t-shirt, wrist band, hoodie, or free entry into the next BIG NIK Camp! Participants were also provided with snacks and drinks throughout the camp. In all it was an awesome time with many of the campers asking, "When is the Next One"?!!
During the holidays some families may struggle to provide meals in their household. That's where BIG NIK comes in! We are a resource for families that may need assistance during Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Back to School shopping, ect... We also provide meals and/or clothes during non-holiday months when families in need reach out. Giving back and being a resource in the community has been consistent for more than 20 years. We feel honored and blessed to serve.
We started doing the "fence of giving" several years ago. The initiative was established to provide winter coats for the homeless and less fortunate. New and gently used coats are donated. They are put on hangers and hung downtown on a fence in a heavily populated homeless area. Those in need are able to walk up and pick a coat for themselves and their children if needed. Having a passion to give back to the community is the driving force behind BIG NIK!
BIG NIK Basketball Clinics is a weekly (year round) clinic held at Baxter Community Center. Students that are signed up for the afterschool program are able to participate for free. Each week a new skills set is taught with live games at the of each session to assure proper translation to a basketball game setting. They are also learning sportsmanship, teamwork and patience. Having grown up in the Baxter Community Center neighborhood makes this weekly event extra special for BIG NIK!
